Prof. Dr. Nejat Bora Sayan
A Pioneering Journey in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Nejat Bora Sayan was born in 1958 in Iğdır, Turkey. He completed his primary, middle and high
school in Ankara. In 1982, he has been graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Dentistry.
In the same year, he has started his doctorate in oral and maxillofacial surgery and he recieved
his “doctor” title in 1987. He received the title of associate professor in 1989. Between 1989-
1991, Mr.Sayan conducted scientific studies in the University of Osaka Faculty of Dentistry,
about orthognathic surgery, cleft lip and palate and TME diseases with the scholarship of the
Japanese Ministry of Education. Sayan worked as vice dean and head doctor in Ankara
University Faculty of Dentistry.
In 1996, with the B2 scholarship of TUBITAK NATO, he has worked on temporamandibular joint
surgery and laser in the UK London Royal Hospital. Sayan was the Dean of Ankara University
Faculty of Dentistry, from 2000 until 2010. In this period, he founded the Faculty of Dentistry of
the Near East University in Cyprus. Dr. Sayan was the President of Turkish Oral Maxillofacial
Association (2008-2010), Turkish Japanese Foundation (since September 2019), and Japanese
Universities’ Association (since 1996). Prof. Sayan was awarded with Japanese Foreign Ministry
award in 2005 and with the Japanese Empire award in 2015. In the same year, because of his
Japanese Empire reward, Osaka University has organized “Nejat Bora Sayan” symposium. In
2015, he retired by his own request from Ankara University and then he assumed Founding
Dean of Kemerburgaz University. In 2016, after his leaving, he started to work in his own clinic
in Ankara. Dr. Sayan has published several scientific articles and organized different
conferences around the world.
Prof. Dr. Nejat Sayan has spent forty years teaching maxillofacial and restorative surgery to his students at the university. He is an internationally renowned expert in maxillofacial surgery and won many international awards for jaw surgery and implant. He and his team has unique experience about the facial anatomy.
